about

Perhaps the most interesting work is that which can’t be easily categorised; which seems to drift in on its own breeze, distinct and compelling. Ryan Von Gonten’s new album is certainly one such thing, calmly moving between genres and influences with such ease and consideration you barely even notice the change. Featuring eight wonderfully-detailed songs, Truthlikeness is a remarkably assured debut, equally comparable to the likes of Beach House and Youth Lagoon as it is Neil Young and Cocteau Twins.

Having spent the best part of a decade playing with the likes of The Walkmen’s Peter Matthew Bauer and Lomelda, Ryan Von Gonten finally crafted his own solo album in the wake of a move from Texas to Oakland, California. The album also features contributions from a number of significant players from his home state, including Hannah Read (Lomelda) and Andrew Stevens (Hovvdy, Lomelda).

Track Name: Fabrique
every night alone, well i never thought you’d dye it in your hair
your lying when you hear that you didn’t
every night untie if you want to let a braid down in the house
and you hate it, alone

every night in your joy land when there’s no one ever crying, never sad
yeah i am never sad, that again
every night in the starline, every night any lying every said
your lay’ing alone

in silence, you can
in silence, i can
in my lens, i am
in my lens, i can
Track Name: Anthem
every hour in you go, you know who i am
every day you know, who you are
every hour in and all you love, well i am
the door, to go, home

i never knew i, i never, hide it
i knew i never, i go, i know you’ve had enough

every night at the door, i never say to go
every night i’m at your door, i’m out here healing
every night in the door way, and even there i’m goin
behave in love

i never go out, i hate it
i never go out, i gave it a chance
i never go out
go
out
Track Name: Corpse Flower
the start of a college atmosphere
when i met you with no interference in the tangle of it
followed by a hateful minute

i give you nothing but light now
i give you nothing but light now
even when i go out of sight
i give you nothing but light now

and part of every original
connection i've been in it for
four in the morning regret
wish i hadn't laughed at that

i give you nothing but light now
i give you nothing but light now
even when i go out of sight
i give you nothing but light now
Track Name: Truthlikeness
never told a soul, i haven’t done enough
would of thought i lier seem bad enough
doubt a time beat when i was standing up
i was ready, i willing

to get out of the time
a feeling without a need for a sign
to tell anyone my side
it was heavenly again

why you never see it
why you never need it, again
but i hear that your searching
i hear that your finding another right

the other night you go in your merryland
every match you fall in, you take it down
every dome you look in, another life
where there’s nothin goin, you hide alone

yes and no one else
your better than that, but you dont let out
until i realize
you did it, again

why you even believe it
why do you think you need it
but i hear that your searchin
i hear that your finding another right
Track Name: Coaster
ever thought if it’s colder you’d say that you never tried
ever thought in the morning i take you were tongue tied
i have known you so well, you don’t go
ever thought i was turnin, you didn’t need to go back

how did you know that
i didn’t know that
how did you find out
i didn’t know how

there’s a chance i was meant to be up in front of it
there’s a chance i don’t have any reason to go for it
but what’s the point in giving, if i’m not living
what’s the point in taking down what i didn’t put up

how did you know that
i didn’t know that
how did you find out
i didn’t know how
Track Name: In No Sense
why do we fall for it every time i try to invent a con
i got a lot of potential, but i know that it won’t last long

innocence
giving it, up

i want to side with the mind callin out to me from the sun
i never said we don’t have to hide where it all comes from

innocence
giving it, up

i feel it when i get a hit, i was already fallin
i never want to be the one, that was nobody's problem

innocence
giving it, up
Track Name: Mr 2000
pick yourself and polish it
make yourself in all of it
i never
i never
ball up all the color in
all the feeling you wanted
i never
i never

giving all the right hand looks
reading all the left hand books
i never
i never
seeing a lot of solid peer
makin all the difference here
i never
i never

laughing as i’m ending
all the competition
i never
i never
dig another tunnel in
to the politician
i never
i never
Track Name: Yum
never thought you’d get up
you don’t buy enough
every night you lay there
thinking no, you get out

if nobody silent fell in
i give it that there’s no one around
i never fade

give it all a name
but don’t bottle up in the silence
get up and begin your childhood
i laid down in a silo
